From summer break to the holiday season, families leave home year round for vacation. As you check items of your list of what to bring with you, you need to remember to protect what you are leaving behind. There are many ways of securing your home before going on vacation.
One of the easiest and most effective ways to deter thieves is by installing motion-detecting lights around the exterior of your home. These lights turn on when someone approaches your home, giving full view to your neighbors and security cameras. Timed lighting is another option that you can use indoors and outdoors. As the sun goes down outside, the exterior of your home will be illuminated. Your interior lights will turn off and on, giving the illusion that you never left home.
Before leaving home, it is important to put the “keys” to your home inside your home. The “keys” include physical keys, garage door openers, the code to your garage, and any other item that could grant access to your home. Move your garage door remotes from the visor of your car to the glove box or inside your home. If you have any keys that you hide in discreet places outside of your home, remove them; law enforcement advises that these keys tend to be easy for thieves to find.
If you are planning to have cleaning services or deliveries to your home while you are away, but do not want to give away a key or a code to your home, you can install a garage door monitor. This system allows you to monitor up to four doors, with the ability to open and close them from anywhere. It also alerts you if a door has been left open, and stores security details, including a time log of the doors’ use.
Lastly, you will want to tie up loose ends that will improve the safety of your home. Put a hold on your mail, hire lawn care and snow removal services, and move your valuables to a safe deposit box. In the age of social media, it is wise to tread lightly on social media; make your accounts private, and save your stories and photos for sharing until after you have returned safely home.
